Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake eater. Part one

With the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The phantom pain (hopefully this year but probably not), the Metal Gear saga has, unlike John Rambo, gone full circle. All the way from the beginning in Metal gear on MSX, to the end in MGS V on PS4 (and all those other consoles).

But it has not been a straight line from start to finish. With prequels, spinoffs and a very confusing storyline, the Metal Gear saga is a maze and it can be very hard to keep up with everything.
That is about to change.

Starting today, I will play and review every Metal Gear game (except Acid 1&2, mobile, The twin snakes and Ghostbabble for obvious reasons) in chronological order. Starting with Snake eater and ending with Guns of the patriots (not sure about Revengeance yet).

I will analyze the story and try to re-tell it in such fashion that actually make sense. Believe me when I say, it still puzzles me to some extent so I am partly doing this to make me understand it as well.

Before we begin, I want to warn you that I will be spoiling huge chunks of the story. So, if you haven't played any of the games, stop reading and go play them now!

That being said, Let's begin.

It all begins in 1964. A former Green beret is being transported by plane into the heart of the Sovjet union wilderness. His mission: to find and extract a scientist named Nikolai Stephanovich Sokolov. A former defector, Sokolov was given back to the Sovjets in exchange for them removing their nuclear missiles from Cuba. Now the situation has become unstable and Sokolov has to come back to the United States.

The man with the responsibility to make all this happen is a British Major known only as Zero. He is also the leader of a black ops taskforce known as Fox unit, and it is with the success of this miasion that the Fox unit will be officially recognised as a part of the military.

To make sure the mission will be acomplished, Zero recruits a CIA agent and former soldier codenamed Naked snake to handle the extraction.
Everything is going as planned when suddenly, a person from naked snakes past appears. It's the legendary soldier codenamed The boss. She has defected and is taking Sokolov with her as a sign that she is loyal to her new comrades. She ia also bringing a nuclear warhead that can be fired by a single person. Snake tries to stop her but she defeats him, breaking his arm and two of his ribs before throwing him of a bridge and leaves in a helicopter with Colonel Volgin, her nrw commanding officer.

Volgin fires the warhead at sovjet soil, since the warhead is american made he can use this as away to trump up the tension between the two warring nations.
Snake wakes up on a muddy bank. He is heavily injured but alive. The mission is a total failure...

One week passes and the apparent attack on the sovjet union by america forces president Johnson to act. He lays the blame for the failure on the Fox unit and tells Zero that the only way to redeem the situation is to go back to Sovjet and take Sokolov back. Also the traitor, the boss, must be eliminated together with her entire unit and their leader Colonel Volgin.

Snake goes back into the jungle and sets out to clear Americas, and his own name.
He meets up with an American spy, codename EVA, who has nestled her way into Volgins upper ranks. She explains that he has to make his way through the jungle and infiltrate Volgins main base Grozny Grad. On his way there, he comes upon a place called the Granin design bureau. There he meets another scientist called Granin. He tells snake that the reason Volgin wanted Sokolov was because he was the creator of an experimental new weapon. A tank, capable of firing a nuclear missile from any terrain. That is what is going on inside Grozny Grad. Snake askes how Volgin can afford all this on his own, and that is when Granin tells him about the philosophers legacy.

An enormous sum of money, amassed by the three great nations after WWI, the legacy wasmeant to be used by the group calling themselves The philosophers to rebuild the world to their liking, but internal strife and world politics left the philosophers in shambles and one Sovjet general used the commotion to take control of the legacy. That was Volgins father, who laundered the money and passed it on to his son.

The mission parameters now changes and snake has to find the legacy, destroy the weapon (called the Shagohod), find Sokolov and kill the boss.
Snake traverses the jungle, sneaking and fighting his way through the Sovjet army, and running into members of the COBRA unit (the boss old unit). Finally he reaches Grozny Grad, after some directions from EVA, and he can go about finishing his mission. Now nothing stands in his way, or does it?

This is the end of part one. In part two we will conclude the story and discuss the repercussions of snakes actions.
