Need for speed

You know how, when you've been playing some awesome racing game for hours on end? You have been pulling of the most spectacular jumps and handbrake turns of your virtual racing career, and then you explain all your moves for your friends. You're fastpaced, your breathing is shallow, you're describing every single detail but you're doing it as fast as you can. Everyones heartbeats are syncing up and you can literarly taste the tension in the room?

Need for speed (the movie) is nothing like that...

I am not going to be diving into any detail regarding the story. It's a classic revenge plot mixed with a little rebuilding your legacy type stuff, the story was ok, the problem lie solely in the directing.
When you direct a fast (and furious) car chase you need to keep the tempo way up, you need to make the audience feel the speed vibrate through the entire cinema. Instead Scott Waugh (the director) chose slow, majestic music and mostly wideshots of cars driving by in muffled silence. The fist couple of times it was kind of epic, but when you get into the actual racing, the movie loses all its momentum and it never picks up again.

A carchase movie without a sense of speed is like a... race car without the proper horsepower, fucking useless, luckily the movie is not without its redeeming factors.
The chemistry between Imogen Poots and Aaron Paul is actually pretty warm and bubbly, and their romance (oh no, big spoiler!!!) Comes of as kind of sincere.

And then there is some very amazing carstunts that, with the added effect of no VFX cars, really made you gasp, but other than that there isn't much to keep you occupied for two hours.
I want to say that Michael Keaton steals the show as the mysterious and enigmatic Monarch, but honestly, he is not in tje movie enough to make an impact. Sure he's good in his scenes, but alas not showstealing enough to convince me. Still, if you think this movie might be for you the you should give it a try on dvd or blu-ray at least

So, all in all. I thought this movie would still my desire for the next Fast&furious movie, but instead I am even more frustrated and strung out. Daddy needs his car movie fix, and this shit was cut so many times it's only running on fumes. Not even good enough to huff.

Sorry for all the puns
